MACQUARIE GENERATION AWARDS VEOLIA WATER SOLUTIONS & TECHNOLOGIES AUSTRALIA WITH AN A$80 M CONTRACT FOR UPGRADING BAYSWATER WATER TREATMENT PLANT

October 30th, 2006

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Australia has been awarded the contract to upgrade water treatment facilities at Australia's largest electricity generating company, Macquarie Generation. Macquarie Generation operates Liddell and Bayswater Power Stations in the Hunter Valley of NSW, approximately 250kms north of Sydney.

The contract, worth A$80M, will upgrade the water treatment facilities located at Bayswater Power Station to current technology, and increase capacity to improve water quality in Lake Liddell. This will ensure the reliability of Liddell and Bayswater Power Stations and enable them to continue producing 40% of NSW power for the long term, within the limits of available water.

High quality water is essential for the efficient and reliable operation of power stations. To prevent scaling in the cooling water systems, naturally occurring impurities must be removed before the water is used. This project will increase capacity for water conservation and improve efficiency of water use by removing the naturally occurring impurities from river water stored in Lake Liddell. The quality of water used at Liddell and Bayswater has been affected by reduced access to high flow water, and the capacity of the existing water treatment plant to treat the quantity of water required from Lake Liddell. Lake Liddell was originally constructed to provide cooling water and storage for Liddell Power Station in the early 1970s. Bayswater Power Station, Australia's largest power station, was constructed in the mid 1980s and also uses water from the Lake.

The A$80 M contract demonstrates Macquarie Generation and Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies shared commitment to responsible environmental management through innovative solutions that guarantee health & safety and protect the environment.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Australia (VWS) provided a comprehensive and innovative water solution package to Macquarie Generation, including two years of design & construction, and a 5-year operations & maintenance period for the water treatment plants, in order to meet the long-term water treatment needs of Bayswater Power Station. Operations at Bayswater site started on September 15th, 2006.

"The solution provided by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies will optimise and improve the reliability and availability of the existing water treatment plants. It will notably minimise chemical usage and the volume of the water to the evaporation ponds, and maintain Bayswater as a Zero Liquid Discharge Power Station. This contract therefore illustrates the mutual commitment of Macquarie Generation and Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies to responsible environmental management, " said Laurent Gaborit, Managing Director of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Australia.

The project delivery team involved a single source project delivery solution for Macquarie Generation, providing a clear and single contracting entity in Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. VWS, who leads the project, is bringing together the skills and experience of four Veolia companies (Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Australia, HPD, John Meunier and Veolia Water Australia), each being leaders in their own specialist areas, ensuring a perfect balance between global resources, global expertise and local capability.

The key objectives are to:

  • Optimise & improve the reliability and availability of existing water treatment plants.
  • Improve performance by installing 8 Actiflo® high rate clarification units as a pre-treatment, which is 2 Actiflo® units per cooling tower
  • Increase salt removal capacity thus reducing the salinity of Lake Liddell.
  • Minimise chemical usage.
  • Minimise the volume of the water to the evaporation ponds, by installing a new Brine Concentrator / Crystalliser.
  • Maintain Bayswater as a Zero Liquid Discharge Power Station.
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Australia proposed a comprehensive water solution to Macquarie Generation, based on in-house engineering expertise, innovative and proven technologies developed by the Veolia group. This includes lime softening, pre-treatment using 8 Actiflo® ACP 700 units for clarification process, a very efficient and proven proprietary technology with small footprint, supplied by John Meunier, filtration, Ion Exchange, Reverse Osmosis, Brine Concentration and Crystallisation (using technologies from HPD, world leader in evaporation and crystallisation).

The scope of the work had to be fast tracked to maintain proper management of salinity levels in Lake Liddell, to ensure that the water quality meets set limits for the cooling towers and the station maintained its Zero Liquid Discharge philosophy.
